There are no moose on Mount Desert Island.
19 June 2025
I no longer collect stuffed moose. Unless there's a compelling reason to add one, that is.
Anyway, real moose were chased off Mount Desert Island ages ago. What remains is an overabundance of moose merchandise. They're on mugs, t-shirts, dish towels, wine glasses, candy bags, night shirts, shorts, car magnets, and on and on. There are plush moose aplenty in Bar Harbor. There used to be a world of moose keychains too, the best of which I snagged, and which are dangling from my backpacks, my suitcase, my bikes, and on a wall surrounding a map of Mount Desert Island.
During our trip to Maine this year, Jack started taking pictures of moose paraphernalia. I got in on the fun.
There's one store in particular, Island Imports, that does moose like no other. Here I will admit that several in this photo have found their way to our house since 2017.
In a previous post I mentioned passing by these three moose on display in the Island Imports window.
On our last day in town, I broke down and bought them. They now live on the back of our sofa bed, flanked by two other Bar Harbor expats, the rainbow and spotted moose from that first Island Imports picture. I should get a discount at that place.
Here's the shop window:
More moose paraphernalia elsewhere in town (I do have that mug):
I think this was in the Geddy's restaurant shop:
