Tom got a good turnout for the first of his 21 county high point rides. Today's trip to the top of Sand Hill Road in Middlesex County was easy. Only after we left did I realize that I hadn't even considered getting a picture. There was no view to speak of. Only by looking through the back yard of the house we were standing in front of would one even realize that one might be at the top of a small hill. So, I'm stealing his group photo.
The view is better from a car southbound on Route 1. Look for the water tower at Sand Hill Road, then look south. Route 1 is straight all the way to Princeton, and if it's a clear day you'll be able to see a series of rolling hills for several miles to the south.
Tom introduced a new term today: "ride canary." This is the person he looks for who will determine the speed of the ride. He was focusing on the slowest person when he said this, but as the ride went on his canary proved to be one of the stronger riders of the day.
We took a short detour to look at cows, both real (foreground) and fake (distance).
The herd moved toward us, their side of the fence being muddy, our side grassy.
At the end of the ride, a few of us wondered, with the temperature forecast to be below freezing, if Winter Larry would be leading tomorrow. We decided we'd show up, and I promised to call him and report back. He said he would, and report I did. Several hours later the forecast changed. As of this writing, we'll be looking at 20 degrees at start time.
I don't care. The roads are clear and it's almost April. I think I'm not alone in having lowered the bar for acceptable riding conditions.
