Dumb Towpath Ride

D&R Canal at Kingston

16 December 2018

Jim called this a dumb ride, and it was, because it was cold, bumpy, and not where I wanted to go. Where I wanted to start from was filled with Revolutionary War reenactors. We started instead from the Brearley House in Lawrence Township.

The light was murky and the water was murky. It made for a good mirror and I stopped a lot for reflections.

Chris, Jim, Ricky, and Andrew bumped along with me as we churned through washouts in Lawrence Township.

Princeton was worse, where the towpath was little more than fist-sized chunks of pale red clay among deep earth-moving machine tire ruts.

The terrain got better after that.

At Griggstown we turned around.

By now the air had gone above freezing. This added mush to the bumps and ruts.

A handful of people were fishing off of the Millstone River aqueduct bridge.

We could hear the geese on the eastern side more easily than see them.

On the western side, closer to us, were cormorants.

We finished the ride slightly muddy.

At least we got out. It was better than being at the gym.
