While You Were Out Biking

18 May 2008

My college roommate, Chris, was visiting from Boston for a few days, so I took some time off from the cycling universe to spend the day as a normal person with Jack and Chris. The weather cooperated.

First up was the Trenton Farmers Market. We're not yet in the real growing season, but at least Chris got to see it. She bought two little basil plants.

Next was Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton. Here are some of the sculptures we saw:

These are old newspapers:

My favorites are whimsical creatures the artist called "Beasts." I like to call them "My tail-y guys." Here they are:

This guy's tail is so long it takes a special picture:

Then there were the real animals. First, the bullfrogs, who were making a lot of noise:

And then there were the peacocks, who were even louder:

When we were done, we went to Princeton for lunch at Kalluri Corner. We sat outside on the roof there and watched the blue sky get eaten by a storm front. It was only about 3 p.m. but the day seemed so long already. So this is what it's like to live like a normal person.

We walked to Princeton Record Exchange. Both of us came out with big stacks of CDs. Chris was too full for Thomas Sweet ice cream, but we did take her to the Whole Earth Center so she could get real food to eat on her Amtrak train home.

We lounged around the house for a while then went to Michael's Diner for a cheap dinner. By this time the rain had started, but Tom's Southern Jersey Sojourn ride was still on for Sunday, so we all went to bed early.

At 6 a.m. Sunday Chris and I woke up to get her to the train station and me to Mercer County Park in time to carpool down south. But Tom had called off the ride fifteen minutes after we went to sleep and suggested we meet at 9 a.m. at the park instead.

Cheryl had some extra energy and rode into my driveway before I had a chance to meet her at our corner. Mike was already at the park, where a regatta and a Renaissance fair caused a lot of traffic for a Sunday morning. Tom rode over too.

So there we were, one eye on the road and the other on the sky the whole way to New Egypt and back.

Tom has good cloud karma. We got home dry and the rain didn't start until an hour after that.

Oh, and lest I forget: the coffee was pretty bad and we did Hill Road in reverse. Can't have a blog post without mentioning inclines and alkaloids, can we?

Here's one more Grounds for Sculpture picture:
