Cheryl's Sourland Birthday Ride

 Rocktown Road near Linvale Road

27 September 2015

Cheryl was determined to ride 60 miles on her 60th birthday yesterday. Joe was deputized to come up with a route, so he took one that Cheryl had given him years ago when she needed a substitute to lead one of her rides. Joe and I scoured the web for closed and chip-sealed roads ('tis the season), and Joe made some adjustments to keep us on smooth pavement.

This was an invite-only ride.  I don't know who was invited, but here's who showed up: me, Jim, Tom, Blake, Joe, Dave, Nevada, and Cheryl.

The route to Sergeantsville from Cheryl's house was probably the most mellow way to get there in under 30 miles. It reminded me of my early Hill Slug days. We wound up on roads I hadn't seen in a while, like Rocktown where it meets Linvale:

The Sergeantsville General Store was crowded.  The bathroom is being remodeled (this ought to have been done long, long ago), and the owners keep moving things around the store while they renovate. The coffee has been in three different places since the new owners took over last year.  We used the bathroom in the waffle and ice cream shop across the street. (There's a waffle and ice cream shop across the street? Does anyone ever look across the street?)

On the way home, Joe took us on a loop that went halfway down to Lambertville before doubling back.  We rode on the eastern section of Sandy Ridge Road, where I haven't been in years.

I've never stopped for pictures where Boss and Garboski meet either:

Halfway up Snydertown, Cheryl disappeared from the pack.  She emerged at the end with photos of the mailbox none of us had stopped for:

It says "Mechanic Hideaway."  I hope it's not another bike shop.  We don't need another bike shop.

Back at Cheryl's house there was an ice cream cake, two little dogs, and not much else. More prospective buyers have been through this week. Cheryl is leaving for Florida on Wednesday whether she sells the house or not.
