Barcelona II: On our Way to Sagrada Familia

20 November 2012

What I'm about to ramble on about is already a few days old.  These pictures are from our second day in Barcelona.

The plan was to get to Antoni Gaudi's Sagrada Famila, the inside this time.  We bought our tickets online to avoid the real line.

In the morning I took pictures of the remains of the Roman wall that was just outside our window.

We had plenty of time before our 3:30 p.m. tickets, so we took the subway to Parc Guell, a Gaudi-decorated park that was originally planned to be a housing development.

When we climbed out of the tunnel, we were at the edge of a lawn bowling court.  We watched three groups of people playing.  Only one of them looked to be under the age of 55; the rest were older.  They played seriously, unexcitedly.  We'd seen lawn bowling before, in Italy.  Then, only men played as men and women looked on.  Here, though, women were playing too.

At the end of each round, some of the players knelt to pick up their balls.  Others had magnets on a stick or string so that they wouldn't have to bend.

The teams in the far court, all men, were the best at getting close to the little red target.

We watched a match end at the court nearest to us.  The women in the group wiped their equipment with rags, packed their stuff, and waddled off without saying goodbye to anyone.  The men continued to play.

Next up:  Gaudi, Gaudi, Gaudi.

Hooray! More posts! (I'm curious to see the pictures for me - and gratified, too, of course.)

Horray for women participating in lawn bowling. Women have rights too :)
